ACTION ALERT

WHAT is happening?

Today (Nov. 20) at 3:00 pm, the Interim Joint Committee on Local Government is meeting in Frankfort. Rep. T.J. Roberts (District 66) is scheduled to present to the committee a proposal that would require all law enforcement in KY to sign 287(g) agreements. See draft here.

WHY is this important?

This legislation, if passed, would mandate cooperation with ICE. No choice is given to local governments to choose. Given the egregious and cruel actions by ICE, any cooperation or expansion is unacceptable. Our neighbors are living in fear now. We are seeing US citizens targeted because of their skin color. We have seen violence and overly aggressive actions taken by ICE agents. If passed, this legislation authorizes state and local officers to enforce limited immigration authority while performing routine police duties, effectively deputizing them as “de facto ICE agents”.

HOW can you help?

While the full KY legislature isn’t in session right now, voicing your concerns to the members of this committee is a start on letting legislators know that this proposed action is unacceptable.

Call the LRC (they are tasked with handling public messages to legislators)  in Frankfort at 1-800-372-7181. They will ask for your name and address. Standard practice. They will ask for your intended audience. Tell them all members of the Joint Committee on Local Government. Provide your message. Keep it short and simple. Example: “No to any mandated 287(g) agreements” or “No to Roberts’ proposal to mandate 287(g)”.

Understand that the volume and overall nature of the messages (no or yes to the proposal) are what count. Don’t worry about whether you are eloquent or not in your message- it’s the “no” or “yes” to the proposal that matters.

Our group was formed out of our common concern for the alarming speed in which our country is turning towards authoritarianism in the wake of the MAGA movement and Donald Trump’s 2nd term as President.

We believe that a number of moves that have been made since Trump’s 2nd inauguration are unconstitutional and completely ignore the systems of checks and balances that are the basis of our system of government.

We came together because we did not want to feel helpless and hopeless in the face of this assault on our Constitution and civil society. Our goal is to try and figure out ways that everyday citizens like ourselves can stand up to a movement that we believe is trying to destroy what is left of our Constitutional Republic.

We welcome all who want to be part of a community that does not want to be remembered in the history books for standing idly by while our nation was destroyed from within.
